3 Things You Must Avoid if You Want Real Acne Relief

boyIf your experiences with acne have been anything like mine, every time it seems like you might win the battle against acne, new painful pimples pop up and ruin your complexion again.

I’ve spent years trying to combat acne, but it was always a losing battle until I came up with this simple three part process to get acne relief quickly!

There really are only three important aspects of skin care to focus on to achieve clear beautiful skin — and they are not magic secrets, just three sensible steps.

1 – Avoid Dehydration!

Our bodies are made up of mostly water, and it is the most important thing to put in your body, especially if you want clear skin! Drinking lots of water will help keep your skin beautiful and hydrated and it is the easiest and most helpful thing you can do to keep your skin clear.

Every process in your body needs water to function, especially your kidneys, which remove excess wastes from your body. If toxins are not flushed out, they can lead to embarrassing and unsightly acne.

2 – Avoid “One Size Fits All” Acne Prevention Plans

Every person’s skin is different, so every person’s acne prevention plan will be a little different too. Picking a product to help prevent acne can seem completely overwhelming when you are standing in the drugstore aisle confronted with hundreds of bottles, but it’s not so hard.

If you have a lot of blackheads and whiteheads, you need to clear out those pores. If you have large red swollen pimples, you need a product to kill the bacteria infecting your pores.

So look carefully at your skin to figure out what problems you have. Then read the product labels to make sure they’re a good fit. Now you’ve got a customized acne prevention plan!

*Important Tip!* Make sure that you don’t attack your skin with too many products. That will only irritate your skin further. Figure out what specific problems you have first, and then aim to treat them.

3 – Don’t Let Existing Pimples Go Untreated

Unfortunately, even the best of skin care regimens will still allow a few pesky pimples through. The important thing to remember when a pimple appears is that you can get rid of it quickly if you treat it properly! Here are a couple tips to show you how to remove pimples.

First assess whether or not you can drain it. If it is near the surface of the skin and can be drained easily, go ahead. But if it is deep under your skin, don’t drain! It will only tear your skin and irritate it, making it more prone to infection and further pimples.

After you have decided whether or not you can drain, wash and dry the area. Then treat with a cream that will help dry it out. There are many of these available, just follow the directions carefully.

A final option is to use a cream that will help heal what is left of the pimple to prevent scarring. Neosporin works well for this, but use it sparingly as it is thick and oily and may clog pores!

Tea Tree Oil for Acne Relief

Tea Tree Oil For Acne TreatmentThe world is fast waking up to the wonders of tea tree oil, and some people are even starting to use tea tree oil for acne relief. The famous beauty brand “The Body Shop” has an entire line of products made from tea tree oil. These products are very helpful in preventing blemishes. They deeply purify and cleanse your skin along with absorbing excess oil. Body Shop is one of the many companies that have woken up to the amazing uses of Tea tree oil especially for acne.

Tea tree leaves were earlier used as a substitute for tea, which is how tree oil got its name.  The Tea Tree oil is obtained from steam distillation of the leaves of the tree Melaleuca alternifolia. Among the 100 compounds contained in the oil terpinen-4-ol mainly accounts for most of the antimicrobial actions.  This tree is native to the New South Wales located in Australia.

Tea Tree oil was used in Australia as a potent antiseptic much before any scientific research. However the recent studies support use of tea tree oil in skin care and various aliments including acne relief, dandruff, toenail infection, fungal infection, and Athlete’s foot. It is also used in toothpaste, mouthwashes, soaps and shampoos all over the world. It is also used to cure flu, cough and to clear congestion.

Tea Tree Oil For Acne Treatment

Tea tree oil contains terepinen-4-ol that is mostly responsible for its antimicrobial properties. This helps in killing the harmful bacteria. Using tea tree oil to acne lesion helps to kill Propionibacterium acnes, the skin-dwelling bacteria that is responsible for causing acne.

More and more, doctors are beginning to experiment with tea tree oil for acne treatment. A random trial was done to prove this by the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Department of Dermatology on 124 people. This trial compared the effectiveness and tolerance of 5% tea tree oil and 5% benzoyl peroxide. The results showed that there was significant reduction using tea tree oil, albeit with slower onset of action. It would appear that tea tree oil for acne treatment may be a promising new cure.

Even though tea tree oil took more time in showing results, there were fewer side effects like burning, itching, dryness and stinging that benezoyl peroxide group showed.

Another study in 2007 on 60 patients with mild to moderate acne vulgaris also gave notably better results than placebo.

Using Tea Tree Oil for Acne

Unadulterated tea tree oil should not be applied to acne lesion as it causes burning, itching, dryness, redness, skin irritation and even blistering. The concentration that is advised is 5% tea tree oil gel which can be applied to effected areas.

To make 5% tea tree oil solution mix 5 parts of tea tree oil to 95 parts of water (5cc of 100% tea tree oil to 95cc of water).

Brenda Harper, Calfornian aesthetician uses it on a regular basis with clients who experience acne, with “wonderful results,”. She recommends application of Glycolic acid after dabbing tea tree oil on the affected areas and waiting for 15 minutes.

While tea tree oil is safe, as long as not used internally. Data on oral use of tea tree oil for acne relief is very little and reports of side effects of oral ingestion.

Acne Relief Treatments

acne relief treatmentsThere are a number of acne relief treatments available for sufferers of acne. Acne is a skin condition which can result in blackheads, whiteheads, yellow or red spots, greasy skin and scars. It is very common and affects about 80% of people. It can affect people of any skin color. Acne typically affects the skin on the face, neck, back, arms and chest. The severity of acne can vary.

The aims of acne relief treatments are to prevent new spots from forming, to treat those already present on the skin and to prevent scarring. There is no ‘cure’ as such.

If you are an acne sufferer, you need to keep the affected area clean. You should wash it twice a day with an unperfumed cleanser. Avoid strong soaps because the skin needs oil to maintain its natural condition.

Acne Relief Treatments

There are several over the counter medications you could try. These often contain antibacterial agents such as benzoyl peroxide. Examples include Clearasil Max or Oxy. Benzoyl peroxide can dry out the skin which encourages shedding of dead skin cells. This makes it more difficult for the pores to get blocked and for infection to develop. If you overuse benzoyl peroxide to begin with, you might experience peeling and redness so you should cut down on the use of it until your skin gets used to the product.

If your acne is severe or if you see no improvements after 8 weeks of using an over the counter product, you should consult your doctor for a better acne relief treatment. He might prescribe a topical treatment. These include azelaic acid which is more gentle on your skin than benzoyl peroxide. Topical retinoids contain vitamin A, which encourages shedding of the skin. There are also topical antibiotic lotions such as Dalacin T but you might need to use this for 6 months before seeing any results.

If you have inflammatory acne, oral antibiotics might help. The strains of bacteria are resistant to some antibiotics so this might take up to 6 months to work or not work at all. Some types of oral contraceptives help women with acne. Isotretonoin is an oral retinoid which dries up oily secretions. It can cause side effects including depression and liver disorders. This drug is also unsuitable for pregnant women.

A healthy diet is beneficial to acne sufferers. Vitamin A produces many of the effects of isotretonoin but without the side effects. Vitamin E retards cellular aging and is useful in skin repair. Zinc helps you to absorb Vitamin A and regulates levels of Vitamin E in your blood. It helps to kill acne bacteria and boosts the immune system. Selenium boosts skin elasticity and the action of other antioxidants. Magnesium can balance hormones and help to control acne. Multi vitamin and mineral supplements are a good idea, to ensure you are getting enough.

Alternative acne relief treatments include tea tree oil, acupuncture and nutritional changes. If you have acne, the sooner you commence acne relief treatments the less chance you have of getting scars afterwards. Bear in mind what works for one acne sufferer might not work for another.
